What this template is for
A supply chain diagram shows who hands what to whom, from raw material to the end customer. It is not the same as a generic process map: where a process map follows one path of tasks and decisions, a supply chain diagram tracks several independent entities — suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, distributors, and customers — and the two flows that run between them. Material flows forward: goods move from origin to the buyer. Information flows back: orders and demand signals travel upstream from the customer to the supplier. This template gives you three horizontal chains to adapt. The coffee supply chain runs from farmers and a roastery through a warehouse and distribution center to the café. The automotive supply chain tracks tier suppliers into an assembly plant, then a regional warehouse, a dealer network, and finally the driver. The pharmaceutical supply chain follows API suppliers through manufacturing and cold-chain warehousing to distribution and the hospital or pharmacy. Each stage is a color-coded, replaceable entity with a short role note, and the legend distinguishes the solid material flow from the dashed information flow. Build the diagram around your real partners: which entities touch the product, what moves forward, and what demand signal flows back.

Common mistakes to avoid
Drawing only the forward flow
A chain with only forward arrows hides how demand reaches suppliers. Add the dashed return line for orders and forecasts, or the diagram only tells half the story.
Using one box for several entities
Collapsing supplier, warehouse, and distributor into one 'logistics' box loses the handoffs. Keep each real entity its own node so ownership and accountability stay visible.
Mixing material and information into one line
Goods and demand travel opposite directions. Use solid arrows for material and a distinct dashed line for information, with a legend so the two never blur.
No stage role or ownership
A node that says only 'warehouse' tells readers little. Add the role — inventory, picking, cold-chain, assembly — so each stage shows what it actually does.
Unlabeled handoffs
What moves between a roastery and a warehouse is not obvious. Label each handoff with the goods (green beans, roasted beans, finished product) so the flow is concrete.
