What this template is for

This user journey map template helps you visualize every step a customer takes when interacting with your product or service — from the moment they first hear about you to long after they convert. Use it to align product, design, and marketing teams around a shared understanding of where users struggle, what delights them, and which touchpoints are broken. A journey map turns scattered qualitative research into a single artifact everyone can read in under five minutes.

When to use this template

  • Map the onboarding experience for a new SaaS user from sign-up to first value moment.
  • Identify friction in a checkout flow by charting emotions at each payment step.
  • Align a cross-functional team on where a mobile app is losing users in the first week.
  • Present customer research findings to stakeholders in a format that drives prioritization decisions.
  • Design a support experience by mapping how customers find help before calling an agent.
  • Plan a service redesign by contrasting the current journey with the ideal future state.

How to use it

  1. 1Define the persona and scenario: who is this user, and what goal are they trying to achieve?
  2. 2List every stage of the journey from awareness through post-purchase or post-use.
  3. 3Add the specific actions the user takes at each stage.
  4. 4Map the emotions — frustrated, confused, satisfied — using a curve above or below a neutral line.
  5. 5Identify pain points (where the emotion drops) and opportunities (where the emotion could be higher).

Quick example

Awareness: reads a blog post → curious
Sign-up: fills form → neutral
Activation: empty dashboard → confused
First value: completes setup wizard → relieved
