These SIPOC diagram examples show how different teams use the five-column format to scope and communicate processes. Each example names the SIPOC elements and explains what makes the diagram useful for that context.

Customer support ticket handling

Who uses it: Support team lead documenting the ticket resolution workflow

Why this works: The root cause report output feeds into the Problem Management process as an input — showing how one SIPOC can connect to another in a larger process architecture.

Restaurant order-to-table

Why this works: The expeditor step in the Process column is a quality gate — it verifies the output matches the input (order ticket) before delivery to the customer. The SIPOC makes this checkpoint visible.

Process: Submit request → Budget check → Manager approval → Issue PO → Receive goods
Outputs: Purchase order, Payment authorization, Receipt record

Why this works: The budget check step is a decision gate — if the budget is unavailable, the process routes to an exception path. The SIPOC captures the normal flow and makes it easy to identify where exceptions occur.

Tips for better study mind maps

  • Start with the Process column first — it is easier to identify inputs and outputs once the steps are listed.
  • Keep process steps at a high level (4–7 steps). If you need more detail, create a separate flowchart for that process.
  • A supplier or customer can be a person, a team, a system, or another process — be specific about which.
  • Use the SIPOC as a scoping tool before creating detailed process maps — it prevents scope creep.
  • Review the diagram with people from each column to catch missing inputs or unserved customers.
